Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
