The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
