In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
